Habaneros History
Habaneros has been locally owned by Tim Tolman since 1996. Tim got his start in the restaurant business in Lake Tahoe in the mid-seventies working for several different places before moving to Bend, Oregon in 1979 and opening Mexicali Rose, a wildly successful restaurant and bar that operated for more than 20 years. In 1984, Tim opened Mexicali Rose in Medford. He ran it successfully for 12 years before renaming it Habaneros and moving to Habanero’s present location at North Front and 5th St., making Tim’s establishment the oldest Mexican restaurant in Southern Oregon.
The general manager, Jorge Valles, is an experienced bartender and offers a lot to the restaurant, having worked at Habaneros for ten years.
Habaneros serves only food made in-house with the freshest ingredients. All salsas are unique from others in town and our cooks are always experimenting with new things. The cooks all contribute to the menu, adding their own flare to each dish.
We have the largest tequila selection in the state and the majority of available Mexican imported beers, either in bottles and on tap. We also feature live music in the bar on Friday and Saturday from 8:30 to close (for 13 years now). In early 2007, the cantina was remodeled with a large storefront window decorated with a spicy-orange awning. The window helped make the bar both feel larger and is asthetically pleasing. That same year, the entire building was repainted bright colors to emphasize Habby’s Mexican festiveness for which it has become so well liked.
Habaneros also provides outdoor seating, ideal from Spring-Fall when it’s warm. Our tropical patio is a relaxing place to sip a margarita or imported Mexican beer under our colorful parasols. An old wisteria vine offers both shade and privacy from the street.
